Your guide to Forge de Laguiole

FORGE DE LAGUIOLE is the Laguiole knife manufactory, which produces its knives entirely in the French village of Laguiole according to a tradition dating back to 1828.

The term Laguiole refers to both a provenance and the style of a knife. They have their origin in the village of Laguiole – France, on a high plateau of volcanic and granitic rock, wild and proud, where the formidable history of these knives was born in 1828.

Every original Forge de Laguiole ® knife is stamped with their logo and every masterpiece bears the trace of the Master-Knifesmith that made it. The quality is an expression of the strength and beauty of our breath-taking environment.

The Laguiole knife has now become a cult object, a design reference synonymous with art de vivre and French gastronomy.

The Blade

The blades of the table knives are hot forged from French steel and can have a shiny or satin finish. Thanks to the T12 steel, Laguiole blades have exceptional sharpness, excellent edge retention and remarkable sharpenability, while always maintaining the unalterability of the blade.

The Bolsters

To protect the handle in daily use, Laguiole knives are fitted with end bolsters. The so-called mitres are made of steel or traditionally of brass and close off the handle. They are individually forged and attached to the drilled and polished plates.

The Handle

Precious wood, horn or bone – Forge carefully select the materials for our handles. By hand, their knifemakers carve and shape each individual handle.

The Bee

The bee on Laguiole knives from the Collection series by Forge de Laguiole® is chiselled by hand with a file and awl. According to legend, the presence of Napoleon’s imperial symbol is a tribute to the courage of the people of Laguiole by Napoleon himself.

The Screw and the Lever

Opening the finest vintage wines with sometimes fragile corks requires the perfect tool. With their perfeect sommelier knives you can open even old wines with ease – thanks to the conical spindle with five turns.
